Our fascination with trellis design wallpaper and fabrics is as strong as ever. Originating from the French term "treillage," this elegant motif dates back to the 12th Century when a metal trellis design was a tool used in gardening grape vines. Over the decades some of the greatest interior decorators have incorporated the trellis motif in their designs. William Morris was the most influential designer of the 19th Century and the Trellis design wallpaper is widely regarded as his first wallpaper design. Its pattern is thought to have been inspired by the gardens at Red House, which were organised on a medieval plan with square flowerbeds enclosed by trellises for roses. Morris took the natural forms he found in woods and meadows and used them to decorate the rooms of his clients. In the Trellis wallpaper design, the image of climbing roses and their prominent thorns convey the theme found in many of Morris's poetic works, namely the close relationship between beauty and danger. The trellis design implies that no easy distinction can be made among wild, domesticated, human nature, house, garden and beyond. Everything is interwoven as the image itself. Trellis pattern is ever popular, both as a fabric and wallpaper and is a great way to give a room a country look.
