Toile Wallpaper is very much influenced by the traditional toile fabric design. Toile is a fabric, from the French word meaning "linen cloth" or "canvas", particularly cloth or canvas for painting on and the phrase toile de jouy literally translates as cloth from jouy, and has come to refer to the single-colour print of a pastoral scene on a white or off-white background. Toiles were originally produced in Ireland in the 1700's and quickly became popular in Britain and France. The early printed cotton was produced using wooden blocks before copperplate printing became standard. As the lines on the engraved copperplates are finer than those on wooden blocks, effects such as light and shade were able to be incorporated into the design. The copperplate printing method also opened up the possibility for designs to be no longer limited to florals or geometric designs and allowed for a larger repeating pattern. This new style allowed for the fabric to depict major events of the time period such as the first steam train journey. The pattern portion consists of a single color, most often black, dark red, or blue toile patterns. Though mostly associated with fabrics, toile wallpaper, as in the designs we have available including the classic blue toile wallpaper, is also popular.
